Firefighters in British Columbia are battling a wildfire near the town of Summerland. The evacuation orders for the Trout Creek neighbourhood and sections along Highway 97 have been downgraded to alerts, allowing some residents to return home.

'We are making progress,' said BC Wildfire Service information officer Taylor MacDonald. 'But we need continued cooperation from the public and caution as we work towards full containment.'

The wildfire has burned over 1,000 hectares of land and is currently 5% contained.

'We are hopeful that the weather will cooperate with us,' said MacDonald. 'But we need to remain vigilant as conditions can change quickly.'
