Indian Student Seeks Discharge to Avoid Deportation After Fraud Conviction

An Indian student, Jins Joseph, who has been studying in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador for nearly four years, is seeking a discharge from the court to avoid deportation after being convicted of theft and fraud. The conviction stemmed from Joseph's actions while working as a butcher at a Dominion store, where he defrauded the store of $2,700 by altering meat prices for himself and others. His lawyer, Adam Crocker, argued that the conviction could affect his client's immigration status, as his study permit expires on September 30, and he must leave Canada by then. The sentencing decision has been reserved until August 20.
